DESCRIPTION:A school’s failure has often been almost exclusively defined by its students’ end-of-year test results\, i.e. how many students are below grade level as measured by the state’s high stakes tests in reading\, math\, and science. Identifying failing schools at the earliest stages of decline – when they are in distress – provides an opportunity for easier and more rapid improvement than if the issues have been allowed to fester. Applying an early warning system approach to evaluating school data trends may allow school policymakers and practitioners to identify and support schools prior to failure and negative impacts on student learning and outcomes. This training is designed to provide charter school board members with a clear understanding of charter school board responsibilities. This event also focuses on giving charter school board members with strategies that will strengthen the board and promote strong board governance. \nIn this session\, we learn about using Indicators of Distress to evaluate and support our charter schools from Dr. Aimee Evan of Wested. We will also learn about new data dashboards for school leaders and charter boards from Andy Franco and Amy Odell from the Minga Education Group. Given all that goes into accomplishing this goal both internal and external to your school it can be easy for challenges to bubble up and go unnoticed. Research shows schools don’t just decline all at once or out of the blue\, rather decline stems from these unaddressed issues that fester and permeate over time. This presentation will walk participants through ground-breaking research on identifying school distress prior to that distress impacting student outcomes. The purpose of this session is to help schools\, districts\, and states recognize the early warning signs of school decline and mitigate these challenges. We will guide participants through this research and early warning signs. Participants will audit their systems and map current data collection to data needed to identify early school distress\, helping save schools years of decline and ensure high quality education for students.
